Facebook, the most popular social media site in the world, was founded on February 4th, 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg and his roommates. In just over 10 years, it has become an integral part of people’s lives, with over a billion monthly active users.
Mark Zuckerberg began Facebook as a social network for Harvard students only to later expand to other universities and eventually around the world. Facebook allows users to create an account using their name or a nickname or a pseudonym. Once an account is created, you are able to add friends who already have an account. At first, the site had this feature only for Harvard students, mainly because Mark wanted to ensure that he had control over the site’s content. As a famous computer programmer, he already had many friends at Harvard and wanted to ensure their privacy and safety.
Later on, Facebook allowed users anywhere in the world to create an account, not just those with school IDs. But it is now a place for all types of people to connect with friends, family and acquaintances. Users can upload photos, videos, and text. They can also share links to websites, videos and news, among other things.
Friends are able to comment on each other’s posts and photos and share them with one another. This is a strong contrast to older forms of communication, where people would have to wait for information to be sent to them through snail mail or a phone call.
Facebook users can choose who can see their posts. Their settings allow them to accept friend requests, see the new posts by their friends, and look at things they have been tagged in. But users’ settings also give them control over who can see their own content.
There are many reasons someone may decide not to use Facebook. Some schools do not allow their students to create accounts on social media sites because it distracts from the educational process. Some families have banned their children from having Facebook accounts because they believe that the site is unsafe. They may also feel that Facebook takes away time their children could be spending learning other things, like French or piano lessons.

In 2007, Facebook was ranked as one of the top 10 sites in the world, according to Alexa Internet. In 2008, it had become a top 10 global Web property in terms of unique monthly visitors and pages viewed by users. In 2010, Facebook surpassed Google as the most visited website in the world. In 2021 Facebook has 2.80 billion monthly active users.
Facebook has become the most powerful worldwide social networking site. In the early days of Facebook, it often used facial recognition technology to identify strangers, but this was later disabled. The website also has video chat and web-based chat services, though they are not as popular as other social media sites.
Success is measured in many ways. Some people use exercise bikes and treadmills to count calories burned, while others use their phones to monitor their steps taken and steps taken at work.
